E- Safety (Information for Professionals)

New technologies have become integral to the lives of children and young people in today’s society, allowing them to connect to the worldwide web, communicate with peers or manage their personal lives all at the touch of a button. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are now the communication form of choice amongst the younger generations providing them with a powerful voice to express opinions, contact friends and share multimedia content at little to no cost.

Agencies working with or caring for children and young people should have clear policies and procedures for e-safety, acceptable use of information, communication technology; they should also have policies and guidance for staff, children and families on identifying and managing bullying online – including cyberbullying (NB: the definition of Emotional Abuse has been changed in Working Together to Safeguard Children issued in March 2010, to include cyberbullying).
