What is a Core group?

The Core group will set out tasks for each person to do and will make sure your Child Protection Plan is carried out. It will also make sure that you receive any support you may need.

What is a Child Protection Plan?

It is a plan to improve your care and safety. The plan will decide what should be done and who can do this best - your family, your school, social services (your social worker).

It is important for everyone to work together to complete the plan. This will include an assessment that looks at what is needed and who does what.

Who will be in my Core Group?

Usually your Social Worker, a Teacher from school, your parents or carers, YOU and sometimes another adult who knows you like a School Nurse or Youth Worker.

When does it meet?

The first meeting is held within 10 working days of the Child Protection Conference. After that, the Group will meet not less than every six weeks.

Where does it meet?

At your school, at the local social services offices or maybe at your home.

How do I have MY say?

YOU can come to the meeting yourself or you could:

  • Write a letter
  • Make a tape recoding of what you want to say or how you feel
  • Draw a picture
  • Talk to an adult YOU TRUST, who can speak for you (like a teacher)

Who decides when my name should be removed from the Child Protection Register?

Within 3 months of your Child Protection Conference, a Review Conference will be held. This is to check if the Child Protection Plan has worked and whether your name still needs to be on the Child Protection Register.

People at the Review Conference will decide if your name should be removed from the Register.

Sometimes this will happen at the first Review Conference but not always. If not, the Core Groups will continue and another Review Conference will be set for 6 months later.

Who will know I am on the Register?

Your social worker, parents and/or carers, your Head of Year at school (your Teacher & Head Teacher), School Nurse and Health Visitor (for younger children), maybe the school's Education Welfare Officer, your Doctor, police and the Northamptonshire Review and Conference Service (NRCS) who arranged the conference.
